The Four Way Test

of the things we think, say or do:

Is it the TRUTH?

Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Why I chose to study in Uruguay:  North Carolina is now part of a global community.  Immigration from Latin America has dramatically changed the cultural and demographic landscape of the state.  I am studying in Uruguay to gain a better understanding of the Spanish language and Hispanic culture.

Why I applied for this scholarship:  One of Rotary’s primary goals is promoting international goodwill and cooperation.  This goal is especially important right here in North Carolina.  Using the experiences from my time abroad, I plan to return to North Carolina and work to improve understanding of the region’s new Hispanic community.

Career plans:  After returning to North Carolina, I hope to work as a journalist with a Triangle newspaper, ideally focusing my reporting on the growing Hispanic population.  I am also interested in working in the communications department of an international NGO  with ties to Latin America, like the RTP-based Family Health International or Research Triangle Institute.

Objectives for Ambassadorial Scholarship

·         Gain fluency in Spanish to better serve North Carolina’s Hispanic population as a journalist

·         Cultivate relationships with fellow students, Rotarians, and neighbors in Uruguay to develop an understanding of Hispanic culture

·         Help Host District 4980 with local projects and initiate my own projects with Rotary support

·         Educate Rotary clubs in Uruguay about North Carolina and District 7710:  the communities, the challenges, and the efforts of Durham’s Rotary club

·         Relay what I’ve learned about Uruguay and District 4980 – its people, projects, and worldview – to members of the Durham Rotary and the local community in North Carolina
